When cooking on the stove with oil, you’re going to be gathering quite a bit of grease. It’s important to know that you should never be dumping the excess grease down the kitchen sink. This will cause a lot of problems over time, especially dumping grease and food down the drain.
What happens when I pour grease down the drain?
The grease will travel down the drain and into the sewers where it mixes up with all the other junk down there. The grease globs can build up in your drains, but when it travels to the sewers it mixes with other fats. This can cause backups in sewer pipes and will be problematic down the road.
Where to put the grease?
There are a few options when it comes to disposing of the grease.
Here they are:
- Use a container – One option would be to dump the grease into a sealed container and keep it under the sink. The grease will harden over time, and you’ll be able to throw it out in the garbage.
- Reuse it for cooking – This is an option you can take, but the problem arises if the grease was used with cooking shrimp and you’re looking to cook something else. You’re not going to want the shrimp flavor stuck in it.
- Take to Landfill/Oil Recycling Station – If you have quite a bit of grease, you can always take it sealed to a landfill or an oil recycling station to dispose of it.
